Bentonite is a clay mineral with montmorillonite as the main component.

Since montmorillonite is a 2:1 three-layer aluminosilicate mineral, each crystal layer contains a layer of aluminum oxide tetrahedron. It is composed of tetrahedron. Part of the silicon ions in the tetrahedron is replaced by aluminum ions and part of the aluminum ions in the octahedron is replaced by magnesium ions, which produces a permanent negative charge that makes the surface of bentonite charged and has strong hydrophilic properties.

This feature of bentonite can be fully applied when using bentonite to produce cat litter.
